Every type of wooden furniture starts with the same fundamental attention. Humidity is a woods harmful adversary, so this is the first thing you need to learn. Use a dry smooth cloth or the brush adepter on your vacuum and do not use a wet cloth. Keep the wooden furniture dry at all times by cleaning up any damp areas or drips. Only ever locate furniture in rooms that have a reasonably even temperature and where the humidity is neither high nor low. Similarly, placing your antique table next to the heater is not the best idea.
Push furniture away from sunlight as it can harm the wood. Direct exposure can cause color fading. Although you won’t see the damage straight away, long term this damage is often forever. Avoid putting hot objects on wood, such as coffee cups, candles and other such bits as this can damage the wood immediately. Having wooden furniture in a room means keeping a set of mats at hand (ideally made of cork, because plastic or rubber mats can soften and damage the finish). With these mats you can safeguard the surface of the wood when positioning items on it such as hot cups and hard objects.
Lets explore the different types of veneers
Different types of wood need definitive care therefore we need to find out what type of surface your furniture has. Normally, we can ascertain three basic kinds of finishing – soft (oiled), hard (polyurethane, varnish, shellac or lacquer) or painted. Not all veneers on wood are clear to determine, though painted wood is very easy to observe.
Luckily, there is a simple test to help you: Lightly rub few drops of linseed into the surface (naturally, choose some discreet spot). An oiled or soft coating will soak up the linseed. If the wood doesnt soak up the linseed then try a little bit of acetone. Any lacquer on the wood will dissolve at once while a polyurethane will see it run off. Varnishes and shellacs both appear sticky after minute. Now to work out which of the two finishes it is; place a few drops of alcohol over the area and you will see that shellac reacts quickly.
Look out for the next chapter in wood furniture maintenance where we will explore these different types of finishes.
